Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a talented and dedicated individual to join our team as a postdoctoral appointee: transportation systems analyst. This is a postdoctoral research position with the Systems Assessment Center in the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis Division. We are seeking applicants with a strong technical background and interest related to the deep decarbonization of the transportation sector. In this role, you will be conducting in-depth analysis and research on the total cost of ownership for mobile machinery and non-road vehicles as well as other on-road vehicles. Your work will play a crucial role in evaluating the financial implications and sustainability factors associated with owning and operating these vehicles, contributing to informed governmental policymaking and industry decision-making.

The postdoctoral appointee will be primarily responsible for conducting research on the total cost of ownership for various types of mobile machinery and non-road vehicles, including equipment used in construction, agriculture, mining, and other sectors. You will use models building upon existing comprehensive frameworks to evaluate the financial, environmental, and operational implications of different vehicle ownership scenarios. This will include gathering and analyzing data on acquisition costs, maintenance expenses, fuel consumption, emissions, and other factors influencing the total cost of ownership. With these results in hand, scenarios will be developed to estimate the costs and benefits of deep decarbonization of the relevant sectors. This role will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, economists, and policy experts, to provide insights and recommendations on decarbonization pathways. Research findings will be shared through reports, presentations, and academic publications, contributing to the knowledge base and intellectual leadership in the field.

The Systems Assessment Center includes a diverse group of engineers, technology analysts, economists, policy analysts, and planners who work with the U.S. Department of Energy and other sponsors to assess programs and develop tools for the public to use in calculating potential environmental and economic impacts resulting from implementation of new technologies. If you are passionate about sustainable energy solutions for a more energy-secure future, we invite you to apply for this exciting opportunity.

Position Requirements

  • A recent doctoral degree in a relevant field, such as Engineering, Public Policy, Economics, or Mathematical and Natural Sciences (typically conferred within previous 0-5 years).

  • Experience with creating and using complex data-driven analytical models using Python and Microsoft Excel.

  • Familiarity with a wide range of data sources relevant for economic and environmental analysis, and the ability to identify topics and data sources and engage experts to conduct research.

  • Understanding of the factors influencing vehicle total cost of ownership, including operational parameters.

  • Expertise in environmental analyses, such as life cycle assessments, carbon footprint evaluations, or sustainability assessments, is a plus.
