What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a visionary and team-oriented R&D Manager to lead the Nanoscale Sciences Department (1874), within the Semiconductor, Nano and Quantum Sciences Group (1870). The Department’s goal is to advance the fundamental understanding of materials chemistry and electrochemistry properties and performance for multimission applications implementing state-of-the-art experimental synthesis and characterization approaches integrated with computational and machine learning collaborations. Our collaborative R&D advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale enabling the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's challenging National Security and Energy Mission needs. Our research activities typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our main research focus is directed towards materials electrochemistry for functional coatings, sensors and energy mission needs. To achieve our goals, we engage in R&D collaborations with the other Departments in the Semiconductor, Nano and Quantum Sciences Group, the Materials, Physical and Chemical Sciences Center, other Sandia R&D groups, and R&D organizations outside of Sandia (universities, industry, other national or government R&D laboratories). The Department Manager facilitates and coordinates the identification, development, and maintenance of these collaborative R&D interactions as needed. The Department Manager will lead the development of vision and strategy for the Department in collaboration with department’s research personnel and the rest of the management team within the Group and Sandia’s Materials, Physical and Chemical Sciences Center. The Manager will steward the department’s capabilities, including staffing and career development, advancing experimental and facility capabilities and, developing work portfolios that exercise and advance the technical abilities of the staff. The Manager will also ensure and support positive mentoring for the R&D staff/technologists, postdoctoral researchers and student interns associated with the Department. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Lead the development of the Department’s Materials Science R&D strategy impacting diverse National Security Missions, including our Energy Mission + Work with the senior manager and other Department managers to establish Department R&D coordination and synergy within the Group, Center and Sandia + Use your technical experience to help guide and represent the Department internally and externally + Foster the development of staff, technologists, postdoctoral researchers and student interns + Ensure the safe and secure operation and the Department’s considerable state-of-the-art R&D lab and instrument resources Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + Bachelor’s and advanced degree in materials science, chemistry, engineering, physics, or a related field + Eight or more years of successful materials physics/chemistry/engineering R&D experience with evidence of relevant technical capability demonstrated by a subset of the following: + Publication of results in peer-reviewed journals + Intellectual property generation + External lead presentations or professional society engagement at R&D conferences (please include in the CV) + Experience demonstrating interpersonal skills useful for leadership as evidenced by positive outcomes of a subset of the following: + Prior mentoring of peers and subordinates + Effective R&D customer or collaborator engagements + Completion of relevant training/internship experiences that develop interpersonal skills + Successful R&D project team engagement or management + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + PhD in materials science, chemistry, engineering, physics, or related field + 2 or more years of experience managing a Science and Technology (S&T) organization, or the equivalent program leadership experience + Active DOE Q-level clearance + Relevant experience or training for engaging any of Sandia’s missions. + Experience developing new R&D directions in alignment with strategic needs + Experience conducting or managing R&D in the fields of energy storage, corrosion or other materials chemistry/electrochemistry topics + Experiences demonstrating skills for building trust-based relationships with peers, partners and customers + Experiences demonstrating the ability of building and leading teams that partner effectively and deliver results + Experiences demonstrating consistent with Sandia values (serve the nation, respect each other, act with integrity, deliver with excellence, team for great results), Sandia Behaviors (act courageously, connect with others, be purpose-driven) and for advancing the work place diversity and inclusion environment + Experience demonstrating the aptitude for effective people and organizational management, with experience developing other’s skills and abilities + Experience successfully working with others towards leading strategic planning and the creation and execution of actionable roadmaps with measurable metrics for success + Experience successfully managing basic science research or mission-inspired R&D for National Security, interacting as needed with the broader materials science community + Experience serving as a customer liaison to foster applications of materials science to customers + Experience effectively representing R&D outcomes to internal and external customers + Experience exercising critical thinking on a wide range of technical and nontechnical issues + Experience ensuring safe and secure lab operations About Our Team: The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts collaborative leading-edge experimental materials electrochemistry and chemistry research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enables the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our main research focus is directed along two thrusts: 1. Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (including energy storage and corrosion); and 2. Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (i.e., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, and catalysis). The Nanoscale Science Department have high visibility internally and within the international materials science community evidenced by active peer-reviewed publication, patent activity and scientific community activity. Many R&D activities cross-cut the activities of the larger Semiconductor, Nanoscale, and Quantum Sciences Group, a multidisciplinary group integrating physics, chemistry, engineering and materials science expertise to create new scientific knowledge that addresses emerging threats and needs across the national security and energy-climate landscapes. We provide recognized R&D leadership and subject matter expertise for: 1) the design, growth, processing, and characterization of next-generation wide-bandgap semiconductor materials and devices for power switching, radio-frequency, and optoelectronic applications; 2) the evaluation and development of emerging electronic and optical materials and devices; 3) advancing the understanding and control of nanoscale materials behavior for enabling advanced ferroic, dielectric, electronic, sensing, energy storage, and electrochemical applications; and 4) quantum and superconducting materials and devices. We partner with other groups across Sandia, other government agencies, universities, and industry to accelerate innovative solutions for some of our nation’s most compelling national security challenges.
