What Your Job Will Be Like: Our team is seeking a hardworking postdoctoral appointee to support research related to process metallurgy and additive manufacturing. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan and perform experiments then collect and analyze data with the goal of understanding process-structure-property relationships of conventional and advanced additively manufactured metal alloys using Laser Powder Bed Fusion, ArcLaser-based Directed Energy Deposition (powder & wire), and Fused Filament Fabrication systems + Utilize In Situ Process monitoring data to understand defect formation and Integrate with Machine Learning to advance AM technology + Perform design and characterization necessary to support projects and experiments + Publish high-impact journal articles and present work at national and international conferences + Interact and collaborate with other inter-disciplinary research groups within Sandia National Laboratories to develop new research opportunities and projects + Generate technical proposals and seek independent funding for developing novel concepts in additive manufacturing Due to the nature of the work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or related discipline (PhD must be conferred within five years prior to employment) + Experience with metal additive manufacturing technologies + Experience with materials and process characterization techniques, and process-structure-property-performance relationships + Experience with mechanical and/or microstructural characterization of materials + Experience publishing papers in peer reviewed journals and presenting research at technical conferences on Additive Manufacturing + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Hands-on experience with Additive Manufacturing of metals using laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, or other methods + Experience interacting with in-situ process monitoring techniques in AM machines, whether it be integrating sensor hardware into machines, or using data analysis techniques to identify process anomalies + Working knowledge of Microsoft office, Python, data acquisition and instrument control, Solidworks, etc.) and any other experience related to programming + Excellent communication skills + Active DOE Q-level security clearance About Our Team: The Advanced Metal Processing Department 1832 provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of laser machining/surface modification, precision engineering, metal additive manufacturing, laser welding and implementation of Granta Materials Information. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of components by conventional subtractive machining, additive manufacturing, electrical discharge machining (EDM), laser machining, laser etching/annealing, optical probe measurements as well as technical consulting. Metal additive manufacturing expertise includes alloy development, qualification/acceptance, and design. Current technologies utilized include laser powder bed, wire arc and laser, metal fused deposition (FDM), and directed energy deposition (DED). We support the application and maintenance of the Granta Materials Information database for the Laboratories. Security Clearance:

Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
