We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer Postdoctoral Appointee to join our multi-disciplinary team developing and applying innovative shock sensing diagnostic methods to current and future challenges in the nuclear counterterrorism mission space. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Make high fidelity measurements in shocked and detonating materials using conventional and novel techniques. + Explore and characterize behavior of non-ideal explosives during non-shock initiation and cookoff. + Develop computational capabilities to include hydrocode calculations and model development. + Work as a member of strong multi-disciplinary team. + Communicate results to both expert and non-expert audiences. + Contribute to development of budgets, program plans, experimental designs. + Plan, execute, and analyze data from laboratory and field experiments. + Form highly productive diverse teams to accomplish project goals. + Communicate research results through publications and conference presentations, including peer-reviewed journals (as applicable). + Define your future career goals and seek to acquire technical skills, scientific knowledge, and collaborations needed to pursue them. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent field. + Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance. Qualifications We Desire: + Experience in one or more of the following areas: + Explosive Engineering. + Computational mechanics: simulating, designing, or performing experiments with computational simulations. + Computational modeling and analysis of dynamic systems (e.g. AUTODYN, CTH, ALE3D). + Field/Laboratory testing (particularly with energetic materials and high-speed diagnostics). + Thermodynamics. + Fluid and shock dynamics (including microfluidics). + Heat transfer. + Material properties and mechanics. + Mechanical design, testing, and control. + Engineering and scientific model development or data analysis. + Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify research objectives and develop clear solutions to complex problems while using sound judgment in drawing conclusions. + Ability to work well in teams with diverse skills and backgrounds and be proactive and creative in solving problems that arise. + Excellent time-management skills including the ability to prioritize work and set and meet reasonable deadlines. + Strong written and oral communication skills. + Proven ability to conduct creative, independent research. + Active DOE Q-level or DOD TS security clearance. About Our Team: Department 06647, Energetic Systems Research, conducts focused research in shock physics combined with a comprehensive understanding and analysis of energetic material to develop applications and solutions for DOE, DOD and other US government customers in a direct and timely manner. The department develops, improves, and fields leading-edge modeling capabilities for shock physics and energetic events. The department's core mission also includes the design and fielding of render safe tools for critical national missions, advanced EOD energetic render safe tools, advanced energetic breaching tools, and the characterization of energetic material behaviors. Department 06647 also provides energetics, instrumentation and test operations support for selected SNL and WFO customers. Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
