The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in a relevant discipline area, such as Chemical or Bioprocess Engineering, Fermentation Science or Microbiology?
  • Work on impactful research in bioreactor production systems and make a positive difference in the lives of all Australians.
  • Join CSIRO’s Advanced Engineering Biology Future Science Platform team!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

This position is an exciting opportunity to join CSIRO’s Advanced Engineering Biology Future Science Platform and improve the efficiency of bioproduction processes through a deeper understanding of the interface between bioreactor engineering and microbial behaviour. The CERC Fellow will build on CSIRO’s existing expertise in microbial fermentation and bioproduction to develop novel approaches to increase the efficiency and utility of bioreactor production systems.

The CERC Fellow will explore optimisation of the production of recombinant proteins, biologically active metabolites and other bioproduction targets in existing bioreactor systems. They will build computational models of these processes, with the aim of developing reliable methods to design and predict bioproduction outcomes and to guide the development of new bioreactor technologies. In parallel to the technical development of the bioproduction models, the CERC Fellow will use insights from the literature and industry networks to identify the end user needs for improved microbial bioproduction.  The CERC Fellow will have access to an experienced supervisory team for all aspects of the project.

Your duties will include:

  • Build innovative models of microbial growth and bioproduction.
  • Develop novel predictive approaches for optimisation of bioproduction platforms.
  • Work with chemical and mechanical engineers to devise new bioreactor designs.
  • Carry out experimental work on microbial bioproduction systems.
  • Carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.

Location: Clayton, Victoria

Salary: AU$92,624 - AU$101,459 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

Reference: 95211

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Chemical or Bioprocess Engineering, Fermentation Science or Microbiology. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with, and understanding of bioproduction, precision fermentation or biosystems modelling.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary, potentially regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
