What Your Job Will Be Like: Our Team is seeking a Engineering and Operations Product Design Engineer to operate as part of our dynamic team at the Advanced Materials Laboratory (AML), Department 1815, within the Materials, Physics, and Chemical Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories, (SNL). This position requires working with multiple SNL organizations and customers including Nuclear Deterrence (ND) Product Realization Teams (PRTs), Production Agencies (PAs) and Systems Organizations to inform, manage design, and deliver Direct Ink Write (DIW) silicone pads, cushions, foams, and encapsulant products. The successful candidate needs to demonstrate independent problem solving skills and cooperative teamwork and communication with technical staff, technologists, post-docs, and students. The position is to lead lab advanced manufacturing design of products and ensure design feasibility from a manufacturing and product maintenance perspective. The successful candidate will perform high consequence evaluation and qualification support of DIW and other Additive Manufacturing (AM) products developed at the AML R&D facility located at the UNM technical park located in Albuquerque, NM. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Utilize knowledge of engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices to develop and deliver AM solutions + Develop and perform tests used to support qualification of AM processes and products + Assist Production Agency partners with the identification and correction of issues observed during scale-up from development to production + Act as work planner and technical work document owner for a large team owning numerous AM capabilities and labs + Develop team and customer relationships to promote efficient coordination and rapid product realization + Document work and results as required to meet customer needs (presentations, test reports, memos, SAND Reports, etc.) Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite Qualifications We Require: + Bachelor’s and masters degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field or a STEM bachelor's plus 4 or more years relevant experience (in lieu of the master's) + 3 or more years experience in additive manufacturing printing + Work experience with computer assisted design (CAD) and modeling software such as SolidWorks, Creo, and AM utilities + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Commitment to laboratory and facility safety + Experience working with PRTs, System Organizations, and PAs to develop and refine product definition and requirements + Demonstrated ability to design, build, and operate direct ink write manufacturing tools + Experience making and reporting precision dimensional measurements + Experience with common office software, such as the Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word) + Experience in performance testing used for qualification of ND processes or systems + Experience with document control and records management + A dedication to producing high-quality results using good laboratory techniques and focused attention to detail + Ability to rapidly learn new skills and work in a fast-paced environment + Excellent communication skills About Our Team: The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department, 1815, conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities. Specifically, activities in our research groups include; synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, understanding different routes to nano-scale particles and thin films, understanding the rheology of metal-particle “inks” and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self-assembly of nanoparticles in 2- and 3-dimensions. Processing research and development includes; providing a “Direct Write” capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates, electrospining of fibers of vastly different compositions, and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize solar energy conversion, CO2 sequestration, and advanced medical treatments. Our customers include all of Sandia’s mission areas and numerous external collaborators. Our laboratory facilities are located at the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at local high schools, community colleges and UNM, as well as universities throughout the United States. Additionally, we are able to collaborate with a variety of world-class scientists that may not be U.S. citizens. Security Clearance:
