What Your Job Will Be Like: Our Team is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to support research and development efforts in our analytical chemistry laboratories. Our analytical laboratories employ an expansive suite of gas, liquid, and solid analytical tools (GC, GC/MS, LC/PDA, UPLC/MS, DART/MS, IC, GPC, ICP/MS, ICP/OES, LECO, LIBS) to solve problems and further fundamental understanding of materials interactions. The Materials Reliability department is part of the Material, Physical, and Chemical Sciences Center (Center 1800). Center 1800 more broadly supports Sandia’s mission by assisting in the prediction of performance and reliability of materials, developing/processing new materials through computation and synthesis, and the development of novel characterization and diagnostic tools and approaches. The selected individual will be encouraged to collaborate in this multi-disciplinary environment and to plan and execute critical analyses to tackle materials forensics challenges and identify innovative research opportunities. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Develop new methodologies or tools for measuring gas, liquid, or solid compositions and their impurities + Utilize existing tools and technologies in unique ways to solve complex problems + Further the understanding of materials aging, decomposition, or interaction with other materials + Learn about a variety of processes and products and select appropriate analytical tools to evaluate those processes and products + Communicate effectively with customers, determine their analytical measurement needs, design protocols and test methods, collect data, and report to customers + Work collaboratively with staff, technologists and others both within and external to the Materials Reliability department + Publish and/or present the results of your work both internally and externally This is an outstanding opportunity for a qualified individual to participate in groundbreaking research while contributing to a large variety of problems faced by the nuclear deterrence complex and to bring their skills to bear in solving these problems. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + Possess, or are near completion of, a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science or closely related science or engineering field + Understanding of and experience with mass spectrometry ionization methods (ESI, APCI, EI, CI, MALDI) + Proven track record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + The ideal candidate will also have the following: + Experience with proposing and acquiring funding for original technical research + Demonstrated experience working with highly hazardous chemicals (HF, strong acids, etc.) + Experience with separations (gas and liquid) and detectors (mass spectrometry, FID, TCD, UV/VIS) + Advanced data processing skills with Masslynx and/or Chemstation and/or Masshunter/AMDIS + Experience working with MatLab + Ability to prioritize tasks and execute multiple projects simultaneously + A dedication to quality, safety, collaboration, and teamwork About Our Team: The reliability of devices, components, and ultimately systems is directly affected by the properties and interactions of their constituent materials. The prime goal of the Materials Reliability Department is to ensure that effective materials-related information is provided to customers who design and field high-consequence hardware, such that long-term reliability will be attained. Our department's R&D activities focus on the needs of Sandia's Nuclear Deterrence program customers. We also provide support to customers in other areas including Energy and Environment and National Security Programs. We have expertise in gas/solid interactions, corrosion and electrochemistry, and the aging and mechanical properties of ceramics, glasses and other brittle materials. We provide this expertise and support to our customers during all phases of design, production, storage, use, and retirement. Security Clearance:

Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
