What Your Job Will Be Like: Are you passionate about materials and metals processing? We are seeking a hardworking postdoctoral appointee to support research related to process modelling for metal additive manufacturing. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan and perform experiments then collect and analyze data with the goal of modelling process-structure-property relationships of conventional and advanced additively manufactured metal alloys using Laser Powder Bed Fusion, ArcLaser-based Directed Energy Deposition (powder & wire), and Fused Filament Fabrication systems + Utilize In Situ Process monitoring data to understand defect formation and Integrate with Machine Learning to advance AM technology + Perform design and characterization necessary to support projects and experiments + Publish high-impact journal articles and present work at national and international conferences + Interact and collaborate with other inter-disciplinary research groups within Sandia National Laboratories to develop new research opportunities and projects + Generate technical proposals and seek independent funding for developing novel concepts in additive manufacturing Join our team and achieve your goals while making a difference! Qualifications We Require: + Have, or are pursuing, a PhD in metallurgical/materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field + Experience with process modelling for AM processes + Experience with materials processing (e.g., Solidification, Welding, Deformation, Additive Manufacturing) and characterization (e.g., Microscopy; Thermal/Mechanical Magnetic behavior) to establish process-structure-property relationships. + History of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE L security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience with laser powder bed fusion, arc/laser-directed energy deposition, or FFF additive manufacturing of metals + Experience with machine learning and feedback controls + Experience in designing and conducting experiments + Experience with using AM for alloy design/discovery + Experience with thermodynamic and materials modeling platforms + Experience with sensors (IR cameras, Pyrometers, Acoustic monitors, High speed cameras, etc.) and data acquisition + Experience with Data Analytics and Image Processing (Matlab, Python, or others) + Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills About Our Team: The Advanced Metal Processing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of laser machining/surface modification, precision engineering, metal additive manufacturing, and implementation of Granta Materials Information. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of components by conventional subtractive machining, additive manufacturing, electrical discharge machining (EDM), laser machining, laser etching/annealing, optical probe measurements as well as technical consulting. Metal additive manufacturing expertise includes alloy development, qualification/acceptance, and design. Current technologies utilized include laser powder bed, wire arc and laser, metal fused deposition (FDM), and directed energy deposition (DED). We support the application and maintenance of the Granta Materials Information database for the Laboratories. Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions. Security Clearance:

Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
