Job Description

Summary

Dr. Yingbin Fu's laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is seeking a talented post-doctoral fellow. The Fu lab is interested in using the visual system to study angiogenesis, cholesterol metabolism, inflammation, and the biological mechanisms underlying various types of neurodegeneration, and to develop innovative treatment strategies. The Fu lab has made significant contributions toward the understanding of the role of a multifunctional serine protease HTRA1 in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the pathogenesis of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV, a variant of wet type AMD), and the role of cone opsins in cone photoreceptor degeneration. Our recent research includes the following projects: 1) the role of the apolipoprotein-A-I binding protein (AIBP) in AMD; 2) the mechanism and treatment strategies for anti-VEGF resistance in wet AMD; 3) lipid metabolism and AMD, and 4) generating novel models of photoreceptor degeneration for regenerative cell therapy (NIH U24 project). Our recent studies have identified a mechanism for anti-VEGF resistance in wet AMD and developed the first potential AIBP/apoa-I/anti-VEGF combination treatment to overcome anti-VEGF resistance (PCT/IB2021/055463 patent pending). The PI has won the National Institute of Health/National Eye Institute Audacious Goals Challenge Awards (https://rebrand.ly/nih-award1; https://rebrand.ly/nei-award1).  The candidate is expected to develop a highly innovative and effective treatment for AMD by targeting its multiple underlying causes including cholesterol metabolism, angiogenesis, inflammation, etc. The lab uses the following techniques for this study: histopathology on animal models and human specimens, transcriptome profiling, advanced in vivo imaging in animal models, gene therapy, drug delivery, etc.  We place emphasis in Translational Research-- discovering disease mechanisms and developing innovative treatment strategies. Due to the translational nature of our research, students and postdocs will have good employment opportunities in both academia and industry.
