Job Description

The Chemical & Fuel Cycle Technologies Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to join a multidisciplinary team developing process-intensifying equipment for used nuclear fuel recycling. Applicants should have an interest in applying their foundational knowledge of multiphase flow to design, fabricate, and test new technologies to enhance aqueous chemical separations.

With guidance, the successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the design, additive manufacturing prototyping, testing, and commercialization of rotating equipment for radiochemical separations. This includes working independently to plan and perform laboratory or computational experiments to optimize mass transport in dispersed flows, editing or producing CAD drawings, and collaborating with team members to produce and test functional equipment prototypes. Prior experience working with radioactive materials is not required. However, applicants should have excellent attention to detail and be comfortable working in a laboratory environment.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in chemical engineering, mechanical/aerospace engineering, or a related discipline granted within the last 3 years.

  • Strong background in fluid dynamics of multiphase flow (especially liquid-liquid or gas-liquid flow).

  • Hands-on experience working with experimental systems.

  • Skill in oral and written presentation of ideas, discussion of technical results and in the development of technical reports and presentations.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

  • U.S. citizens only

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar with additive manufacturing, especially resin-based (stereolithography) 3D printing.

  • Knowledge of aqueous separation principles, particularly as applied to nuclear materials and medical isotopes.

  • Experience working with dispersible radioactive materials.
