Job Description

We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Appointee position within the AMO Physics group in our Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division (CSE).  We study fundamental x-ray and optical interactions with atoms and molecules in gases, clusters, and liquids, laying foundations for applications of interest to the Department of Energy.


In this role you will:

Develop instrumentation and experimental protocols at synchrotron, Argonne ultrafast laser and/or free-electron laser facilities; provide instrumentation setup and testing; perform data acquisition and interpretation; develop data analysis routines, journal publications. Interact with and perform collaborative research; remain knowledgeable of progress in relevant fields of research.

Position Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge and experience in ultrafast x-ray science; ultrafast laser, free-electron laser or synchrotron sources and associated instrumentation and methods; molecular, cluster, or liquid-jet systems; transient absorption, Ion and/or electron spectroscopy; coincidence techniques; development of data analysis routines

  • Good skill in conceiving and implementing experimental methods, planning and conducting experimental procedures, and analyzing and interpreting measurements

  • Ability to communicate scientific information orally and in written reports and publications. Able to work independently on a daily basis

  • Work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary research group

  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a Ph.D. in physics, chemical physics, physical chemistry or optics with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent
