Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral appointee.   The candidate will develop physics-based crystal plasticity models for the long-term behavior of high temperature metallic materials, focusing on austenitic stainless steels.

The candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop crystal plasticity material models for the high temperature performance of stainless steel under long-term creep and thermal aging conditions.  These models will relate back to CALPHAD and/or kinetic simulations of precipitation in the alloy systems.  The work will require developing new crystal plasticity constitutive models in an existing material modeling framework, based on the NEML library and the MOOSE finite element solver. The candidate will help draft and publish technical reports, conference paper, and journal publications describing the research and will be expected to attend and present at technical conferences.

Position Requirements

  • The prospective candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Experience with crystal plasticity methods is required.

  • Past experience working with CALPHAD methods is highly desired, as is specific knowledge of precipitation hardening models for metal alloys.

  • Specific experience developing and implementing material models.

  • Experience using the MOOSE simulation framework is desired, but not required.

  • Coding experience in C++ and python desired.

  • Skilled in oral and written communications and presentations at levels of the organization.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
