Job Description

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to hire a postdoctoral appointee.  This position is directed at developing and characterizing catalytic materials including platinum-group metal free (PGM-free) and platinum-containing electrocatalysts for energy conversion devices including polymer electrolyte fuel cells and low-temperature water and carbon dioxide electrolyzers.

The position involves synthesizing and characterizing catalytic materials using electrochemical techniques and fabricating and characterizing low-temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers.  The position also involves using other tools, such as synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy, scattering, and tomography to evaluate electrocatalytic materials, electrodes, and devices.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent

  • Knowledge and experiences in electrocatalytic material synthesis

  • Comprehensive knowledge of low-temperature fuel cell and water or carbon dioxide electrolyzer electrocatalyst and electrode characterization

  • Considerable knowledge of aqueous electrochemical techniques and X-ray technique data acquisition and analysis

  • Experience in high-throughput experimental techniques is an asset

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work as part of a collaborative multi-institutional team are required

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemistry, materials science or chemical engineering at the Ph.D. degree level with 0-3 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
