Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is currently seeking a Chemical Process Safety Specialist to join their team. This role is responsible for developing and implementing laboratory safety and health programs within the Occupational Health and Safety department.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining cognizance of technical developments in chemical hygiene and laboratory safety best practices.
  • Conducting laboratory exposure assessments and chemical exposure monitoring.
  • Conducting experiment safety reviews and chemical risk analyses (e.g. What-If, FMEA, HazOp, LOPA, Fault Tree Analysis)
  • Maintaining cognizance of codes and industry best practice standards that apply to large-scale chemical processes in research (e.g. NFPA, ASME, EIC, etc.).
  • Analyzing chemical reactivity and process condition hazards associated with pilot and pre-pilot plant scale research projects.
  • Reviewing process documents such as batch cards, operating procedures, PFDs, and P&IDs, heat and mass balances, and improve upon pre-existing versions while accounting for non-steady-state operation (i.e. relief cases, upset and start-up/shut-down conditions).
  • Advising on process control and monitoring technologies (e.g. safety system reliability, PLC programming, over temperature protection, over pressure protection, fail safe considerations, gas detection, interlocks, etc.).
  • Assessing appropriate selection and use of ventilated enclosures and chemical personal protective equipment.
  • Serving as Program Manager for one or more laboratory safety programs (e.g. pilot plant and pre-pilot plant scale research projects, glovebox integrity, laboratory ventilation, nanomaterial safety, chemical hygiene).
  • Developing and conducts On-The-Job, classroom, or computer-based training programs in the area of research safety.
  • Serving on a chemical emergency on-call rotation team.

Position Requirements

  • B.S. or higher in in chemistry, engineering, engineering technology, industrial hygiene, or related degree.
  • Professional experience in chemical safety, chemical engineering, or an industrial hygiene role.
  • Skill in the interpretation of regulations and establishing the means of meeting the requirements in a diverse operational and research environment.
  • Knowledge of hazards and exposures common to laboratory and research operations.
  • Knowledge of sampling methods and equipment, understanding of the limitations of the analytical methods, and knowledge of hazard engineering controls and personal protective equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical assistance for investigations and mitigating hazards common to research laboratory.
  • Effective verbal and written communication, including preparation of effective reports.
  • Skill in building and sustaining consensus and collaboration among key stakeholders.
  • Skill in communicating complex chemical exposure risk issues in clear and concise terms.

  • Experience in ONE or more of the following areas:
    • Laboratory and pilot-plant chemical risk assessments
    • Laboratory ventilation
    • Basic understanding of reactive chemistry and reactive chemistry references and resources
    • Industrial Hygiene and exposure monitoring
    • Toxicology, including exposure pathways and toxic or carcinogenic endpoints
    • Nanomaterial safety
    • Reading and creating Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and / or Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
    • Conducting chemical process risk assessments
    • Participating as a chemical safety or process safety SME in experimental design reviews
    • Consequence modeling using electronic modeling tools
    • Heat and mass balance calculations
    • Chemical energy release calculations
    • Multi-phase flow modeling
    • Hydrogen delivery systems safety

    The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT3 or PT4) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:

    • PT3: Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent.
    • PT4: Bachelor’s degree and 6+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 4+ years of experience, or equivalent.
