Job Description

We have postdoctoral research opening for interdisciplinary research in manufacturing process modeling, optimization, and analysis, focused on transformation towards next-generation, zero carbon manufacturing.

The postdoctoral candidate will develop optimization frameworks for process design and re-configuration towards efficient, low-cost, zero carbon solutions for industry. The analysis component of this research will initially focus on chemicals manufacturing, subsequently extending towards target applications in other carbon-intensive industries such as iron & steel, and cement manufacturing.

The candidate should have experience with formulating and implementing algorithms for solving mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems, combined with a strong background in modeling for thermochemical and/or electro-chemical conversion processes. The candidate is expected to demonstrate the ability for systems-level thinking that integrates engineering, techno-economics and environmental sciences to conduct robust analysis.

The candidate will join a dynamic team with diverse expertise and will receive the support and enabling environment to develop research projects, grow research collaborations, and communicate impactful research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals.

Position Requirements

  • PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or any relevant engineering and computational sciences field.

  • Experience with computational modeling, optimization, chemical process engineering.

  • Skilled oral and written communication at all levels of the organization.

  • Experience with developing mathematical optimization and computational models for engineering systems.

  • Background in process engineering and computational sciences.

  • Ability to integrate diverse knowledge, methods and perspectives to drive analysis and innovation.

  • Ability to lead research projects, establish collaborations, and work with multidisciplinary research teams.

  • Ability to develop and synthesize visualizations to effectively communicate analysis results.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

  • Familiarity with techno-economic analysis.

  • Familiarity with parallel/high-performance computing.

  • Familiarity with developing modeling tools and datasets for public use.
