Job Description

The Concussion Research Laboratory and UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh have an opening for a Concussion Research Postdoctoral Fellow starting July-August 2023.

Overview:
The fellow will have responsibilities and receive training and mentoring in clinical research design and methods, scientific and grant writing, professional presentations, peer-review, and career development. The fellow will assist faculty and staff in the development of grant proposals for external funding from NIH, DoD, and other funding agencies. The fellow will work independently and collaborate with program faculty on peer-reviewed papers and have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, as well as clinical fellows. Research Areas:
Current areas of research focus in the Concussion Research Laboratory include:
• Multiple randomized clinical trials (RCT) of active, targeted treatments for concussion
• Concussion clinical profiles/subtypes
• Concussion risk/modifying factors
• Multidomain clinical assessments for concussion
• Vestibular and ocular symptoms/impairment following concussion
• Long-term effects of sport participation and concussion on brain health
• Saliva-based biomarkers in pediatric concussion and concussion clinical profiles
• Neuroimaging and anxiety in pediatric mTBI
• Health disparities in concussion clinical care and outcomes
• Concussion and women’s health
• Concussion in military service members
• Pediatric concussion
• Concussion in older adults

About the Program and the University of Pittsburgh:
The Concussion Research Laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh is one of the premier concussion clinical research programs in the U.S. The Concussion Research Laboratory is part of the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program, which sees approximately 7,000 patients annually for concussions. The program produces over 40 peer-reviewed publications annually with research funding from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and National Football League, among other funding agencies. The University of Pittsburgh was ranked in the top 10 in NIH research support in the U.S. and was named a top public university in the Northeast in 2020 by the Wall Street Journal. The Concussion Research Laboratory is located on the banks of the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh’s historic Southside neighborhood. Qualifications or Expectations:

  • Minimal:
    • Doctorate level (e.g., Ph.D., MD/Ph.D.) candidates from neuroscience, psychology, kinesiology, sports medicine, rehabilitation sciences, and related fields;
    • Concussion research interests aligned with one or more of the clinical research focus areas listed; and
    • Candidates must have obtained their doctorate degree prior to the start date.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience in concussion research (publications, grants, presentations);
    • Proficiency in data analysis and analytical writing, and familiarity with multidomain concussion assessments preferred; and
    • Priority will be given to candidates with a strong publication record in concussion or related areas.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in the development of grant proposals for external funding from NIH, DoD, and other funding agencies;
  • Collaborate with program faculty and other fellows on clinical research studies;
  • Develop and deliver collaborative and independent professional presentations;
  • Develop and submit collaborative and independent manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Develop proposals for independent funding;
  • Mentor undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, as well as clinical fellows;
  • Perform study-specific concussion and related assessments with study participants.
