Our Environmental Science division invites you to apply to an opening for a Hydrogeologist. In this role you can expect to:
- Direct and participate in the geologic, hydrologic, and geochemical aspects of environmental characterization and remediation.
- Interpret and integrate geologic, geochemical, and physiographic information to develop conceptual and numerical models of complex hydrogeologic systems, and assess their impacts on the fate and transport of contaminants and remediation of hazardous waste sites.
- Promote the development and application of new and innovative investigative techniques, and contribute to the solution of critical hydrologic problems and advancement of scientific knowledge.
- Provide technical leadership and support with emphasis on the geological, geochemical, and hydrological aspects of environmental evaluations and assessments as required under multiple state and federal programs addressing identification, characterization, and remediation of hazardous waste disposal sites and hazardous waste generation facilities.
- Act as project manager or technical leader as assigned.
- Act as a liaison with state and federal regulatory agencies, municipal and other government agencies, and local community members and representatives as necessary to support sponsor and Argonne activities.
- Knowledge of geologic subsurface investigation techniques as related to hazardous waste characterization and remediation including well-drilling procedures, sediment and groundwater sampling, geologic sample description, well-logging, and remote sensing (geophysical) techniques.
- Knowledge of hydraulic parameters affecting hazardous waste characterization and remediation under various subsurface flow regimes, and aquifer testing and analysis techniques.
- Knowledge and skill in the development and application of innovative site characterization technologies and approaches, as necessary, to meet unique sponsor and site-specific needs.
- Experience with depositional environments, sedimentary facies, geomorphology, and their impacts on hydrology and aquifer characteristics.
- Demonstrated success in interpreting geologic and hydrogeologic mapping, cross-section construction, well-log analysis, and integrated structural and stratigraphic analysis.
- Knowledge of the design and implementation of groundwater flow models (such as MODFLOW) for simulating complex hydrogeologic systems.
- Knowledge of the principles and use of solute transport models (such as MT3D).
- Experience in hazardous waste site sampling, analysis, and analytical data interpretation.
- Knowledge of mapping and visualization software, geochemical modeling, and/or environmental geostatistical analyses.
- Knowledge of aqueous and isotope geochemistry, and geochemistry of petroleum, chlorinated solvents, and emerging contaminants.
- Ability to present at technical conferences and sponsor/regulator reviews.
- Publication in related technical journals as the opportunity presents itself.
- Strong knowledge of environmental cleanup laws (e.g., RCRA, CERCLA) and related regulations.
- Field experience and ability to travel to project sites for extended periods.
- Knowledge of applicable state and federal environmental and safety regulations, orders, guidance documents, and permits.
- Prior experience with federal agency environmental management organizations and practices.
- Demonstrated success in program development, coordination, and management.
- Ability to manage multiple projects at various stages of cleanup under RCRA Corrective Action, CERCLA, or state Voluntary Cleanup programs, including providing technical input to consultants and contractors throughout completion of a variety of project scopes (e.g., site investigation/characterization, remedial design, pilot studies, and remedial construction).
- Ability to manage long-term aspects of ongoing remediation projects, including contributing substantially to the preparation and review of compliance reporting.
- Interpersonal and communication skills in diplomatic interactions with others, including people having a wide variety of backgrounds, and ability to work constructively as part of a team.
- OSHA 40hr HAZWOPER Certification.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
