What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a dedicated postdoctoral appointee to conduct experimental Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations for materials science, energy storage R&D. If you are passionate about understanding materials with NMR, consider this opportunity to become a postdoctoral appointee, where you will collaborate with an accomplished team, develop unique methods, and gain compelling experiences in preparation for a career in materials NMR and battery science. During the project, you may be called on to: + Use magic-angle spinning NMR to characterize organic and/or inorganic materials + Collaborate on an NMR hardware development team for coin cell and pouch cell batteries + Use and develop NMR methods that best use our new equipment to probe battery science hypothesis + Coordinate and collaborate with others on team to link spectroscopic investigations with battery performance and aging phenomena + Analyze NMR (and other analytical) data + Generate testable molecular models of process in electrochemical cells + Keep abreast of developments in the field + Contribute to preparation, publication, and presentation of scientific findings A successful candidate will also have opportunities and support, if desired, to collaborate on other projects in the group or pursue additional funding for pet projects and career development. Qualifications We Require: + Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in a chemistry, materials, physics or engineering-related field + Proven experience in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance OR Magnetic Resonance Imaging + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Strong understanding of magnetic resonance theory + Experience with NMR pulse sequence methods development + Experience trouble shooting and/or building experimental NMR hardware + Experience with magic-angle spinning NMR + Experience or working understanding of MRI + Experience with high-resolution liquid NMR + Experience with in-situ electrochemical techniques + Experience with battery fabrication using liquid electrolytes + Experience with lithium metal and/or silicon anodes + Experience with scripting/programming for data analysis + Experience with any additional materials characterization techniques (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gas sampling, mass spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma, etc.) + Experience with DFT methods and GIPAW calculations About Our Team: The Organic Materials Science Department researches and develops new and advanced materials and processing strategies to meet a wide range of specialized applications in nuclear weapons, national security and industrial applications. Our department is dedicated to scientific discovery, creativity, innovation and practical solutions for our diverse customers. The department specializes in aging science and predictive performance of polymers, synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and physical characterization of organic materials, and advanced manufacturing of polymers. We perform reliability studies for polymers with an emphasis on understanding degradation mechanisms, structure-property relationships, and performance margins. Current areas of R&D in the department include: developing novel encapsulant materials, creating new thermoset chemistries for additive manufacturing, developing innovative NMR techniques to understand transport phenomena in polymers, measuring and optimizing electrical performance of polymer dielectrics, elucidating the interdependency of chemical change and polymer physics over long timeframes, creating reversible and degradable chemistries, understanding polymer interfacial properties and adhesion, measuring and predicting radiation effects on polymers, monitoring of reactive thermoset cure kinetics, and quantifying permeation behavior and spatially dependent degradation processes. We perform a complete spectrum of chemical, structural, thermal, rheological, and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials that must perform over 30
