Job Description

The Vulnerability Assessment Team at Argonne National Laboratory performs assessments of security equipment used by the U.S. government and industry to detect and, if possible, eliminate weaknesses. Effectively assessing equipment requires the ability to think from the perspective of a potential adversary, practice creative out-of-the-box brainstorming, and to perform hands-on development and demonstration of potential equipment modifications. The selected candidate for this position will provide applied (hands-on) technical support in the areas of machining, casting and molding, 3D printing, electronics, high resolution photography and microscopy, stamping, engraving, and other techniques that may arise in the course of work. The selected candidate will be expected to maintain records of work performed including descriptions of the tools or equipment that were produced or modified, documentation of whether the tools or modifications were successful or unsuccessful and why or why not, and procedures that would allow others to repeat the work in the future. The selected candidate will also be asked to help maintain, troubleshoot, repair and calibrate laboratory equipment, and may be expected to assist with administrative tasks such as selection and procurement of equipment. The selected candidate will be expected to conform to Argonne safety protocols for laboratory work and complete all necessary training.

Position Requirements

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with a great work ethic, a wide range of skill sets, mechanically and artistically inclined, and an ability to quickly pick up new skill sets.

Interest in physical security, nuclear security, tamper and intrusion detection, and vulnerability assessments is desirable.

Other useful skills for this position include familiarity with hand tools, machine tools, metal and woodworking, 3D printing and design, CNC, molding and casting, and electronics.

Makers, tinkerers, artists, auto body repair, Odyssey of the Mind, and other similar experience with hands-on tool development and problem solving would be very helpful for this position.

Core Value statement: A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Education: Technical institute or AA degree and 5+ years of related experience.

Security Requirement: Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance if needed in the future.
