Job Description

Our Data Science and Learning division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an Assistant Computational Scientist to join their team. In this role you can expect to:

  • Conduct basic and/or applied research utilizing computational techniques and methods in order to advance the understanding of physical phenomena, typically through modeling and simulation of science and engineering phenomena.
  • Carry out first-of-kind computational analysis requiring interdisciplinary expertise in both computer science and a scientific or engineering field, including knowledge of scientific and engineering principles, large-scale distributed or parallel computing techniques, and computational issues in a specific domain.
  • May design, develop, and/or adapt computational models, scientific visualization tools, and software libraries and codes for massively parallel computer systems or embedded processors.

Position Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of machine learning and / or statistics
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Some understanding of computational algorithms to support analysis of DNA sequence, small nucleotide polymorphism, gene expression, and/or small molecule (drug) structure
  • Experience working large language models and other deep learning models
  • Experience working with large language model evaluation harnesses
  • Ability to think independently and innovatively to develop exceptional technical solutions
  • Ability to write research publications
  • Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to prioritize, organize and handle multiple assignments simultaneously in a fast paced environment, while being detail oriented and using sound independent judgment to accomplish tasks
  • Interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills required to interact effectively, tactfully and discreetly with all internal/external contacts and to develop effective working relationships
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in physiology and reconciliation of genotype and experimentally determined phenotype preferred
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork
  • RD1: Bachelor's degree and 0+ years of experience, or equivalent
