Job Description

Summary

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the Marshall Lab in the Department of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. The lab will study mechanisms of internal mechanosensation in health and disease. Sensory neurons that detect mechanical force are critical for a variety of physiological processes, like blood pressure regulation, digestion, and urination. We will use a wide range of techniques, including microscopy, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and behavioral testing to identify how the peripheral and central nervous system encode mechanical cues and to understand how they impact physiology and behavior.

 

This position is located at the main Baylor College of Medicine campus, in the Texas Medical Center in the Department of Neuroscience. The Department of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine has approximately 58 research groups using cutting edge techniques and excellent core resources to better understand a wide variety of questions in neuroscience. The department ranks sixth in the nation for NIH funding.

Job Duties

  • Oversees the mouse colony, which will include animal husbandry, tagging, isolating mouse DNA and genotyping using PCR, and maintaining colony records. 
  • Oversees maintenance of lab equipment and environment. This will include troubleshooting equipment issues, contacting vendors for repairs, and generally maintaining laboratory organization. 
  • Learns appropriate protocols and procedures to support and carry out research experiments in collaboration with other lab members. • Perform qPCR, PCR, nucleofection and other nucleic acid manipulations including but not limited to cloning and maxiprep of plasmid DNA and agarose gel electrophoresis. 
  • Conducts independent research experiments, including tissue collection, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, primary cell culture and confocal microscopy. 
  • Organizes, evaluates, and analyzes data. 
  • Communicates research findings in lab meetings and seminars.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • No experience required.
