Job Description

The Principal Connected and Automated Vehicle Research Engineer will design, execute, and manage experimental research activities on Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) and Cooperative Driving Automation (CDA) systems within Argonne’s Advanced Mobility and Grid Integration Technology Research Laboratory. The candidate will oversee and lead the conception, design, setup and execution of dynamometer and on-road R&D on advanced mobility solutions including conventional and electrified as well as connected and automated vehicles. The Principal Connected and Automated Vehicle Research Engineer will design and execute project requirements and deliverables and lead CAV/CDA testing events to evaluate energy use impacts of production and custom CAV technologies. The candidate will research emerging automotive technologies and develop associated testing procedures, best practices, and standards for laboratory and on-road experimental activities. The Principal Connected and Automated Vehicle Research Engineer will collaborate with various research groups within the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) to develop and execute experimental activities placing real vehicles into simulated environments and developing related experimental capabilities and test procedures that can be mutually beneficial to multiple groups. Collaborations will focus on utilizing existing capabilities and adding new capabilities to the center, enabling cutting- edge experimental activities in vehicle automation and connectivity.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge in vehicle experimentation, specifically XIL or VIL, ensuring selection of appropriate instrumentation and methodologies for testing to provide accurate and comprehensive experimental results on vehicle systems.

  • Knowledge in vehicle communication methodologies, including CAN, Flex-Ray, and Automotive Ethernet.

  • Knowledge in data processing, analysis of vehicle systems.

  • Knowledge in vehicle automation, including perception system sensor technology such as radar, lidar, vision sensing and sensor data processing.

  • Knowledge of automated longitudinal and lateral control features, including algorithm development and test methodologies in simulation and dynamometer/track environments.

  • Knowledge in vehicle connectivity, including vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication standards, protocols, hardware and software tools.

  • Experience with leading proposal development and sponsor interactions.

  • Experience with technical presentations at workshops and conferences.

This level of knowledge and skill is typically achieved through Bachelor’s and 12+ years, or Master’s and 7+ years, or Doctorate degree and 6+ years in computer science, mechanical or electrical engineering or related field.
