Clinical Education Program at The Jackson Laboratory  

The Clinical Education Program (CEP, develops and disseminates education for diverse clinical audiences that aims to support the integration of genetics and genomics for improved patient care. CEP supports the translational mission of The Jackson Laboratory by preparing clinicians to evaluate and apply emerging genomic technologies into practice. CEP is situated within JAX Genomic Education (JAXGE) and collaborates with others in the organization to advance genomic education for high school, undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral learners who are focused on careers in the biomedical sciences.   


CEP uses multiple channels for developing and disseminating education, including case-based online modules, interactive workshops, grand rounds, webinars, blended courses, blogs, web resources and social media. With a focus on maximizing outcomes and the learner experience, CEP has an ongoing effort to explore evidence-based, interactive, and active learning approaches to reach CEP’s audiences. Current content priorities include, but are not limited to, cancer genomics, cardiogenomics and precision medicine. Through collaboration with the Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative (, CEP has a strategic goal to develop and deliver precision oncology education to oncologists in Maine and nation-wide. In addition to these specialties, CEP focuses on education for clinicians in rural, community and underserved settings. CEP strives to create an inclusive learning environment and develop education that addresses clinical needs of diverse patients.  


CEP is a highly collaborative team that follows an evidence-based education development process. CEP will provide on-the-job training and professional development on evidence-based education development, as needed. Due to the nature of the work and dispersed locations of team members, the team uses multiple technologies and systems for education development and communication daily. 


Clinical Genomic Educator 

Under general supervision of the Director of Clinical Education (CEP), the Clinical Genomic Educator will operate with a high degree of independence. This position requires a candidate with the ability to manage the day-to-day development, implementation, dissemination, and ongoing management of programs. The Clinical Genomic Educator will work both collaboratively and independently. The candidate must be familiar with using technology to work within a distributed team. 


The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and an interest in four main areas:  

  • Clinical genetics and genomics  

  • Written education development 

  • Project management  

  • Audience engagement and outreach  


The position can be either based on a JAX campus (Bar Harbor, ME and Farmington, CT) or a remote position (U.S. residency). Travel to or between JAX campuses as well as other regional travel is required.  


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop, implement, and disseminate educational offerings to address emerging content areas and educational trends in collaboration with clinicians and CEP staff. (50%) 

  • Execute educational projects, including: (1) managing timelines and resources; (2) interacting with instructional design, communications, clinician, and content developer collaborators; and (3) facilitating project meetings. (25%) 

  • Assist in the development and implementation of marketing for clinical education products in collaboration with CEP, JAXGE and JAX team members. (20%) 

  • Contribute to discussions about strategic directions for CEP that align with JAXGE and JAX strategic priorities. (5%) 


 Key Metrics 

  • Develop and maintain genetic and genomic educational content for diverse health professional audiences, applying best practices in adult education and collaborating with instructional designer and subject matter experts as indicated.  

  • Synthesize multiple sources of data for needs assessment 

  • Manage project-specific timelines and communications 

  • Coordinate applying for continuing education credits when appropriate 

  • Implement education programs 

  • Develop and implement marketing content for education programs, in coordination with CEP and Strategic Communications. 

  • Contribute to CEP planning for strategic goals and initiatives  



  • Advanced clinical degree or equivalent experience (e.g., bachelor’s degree or PhD with 5+ years in a clinical role)   

  • Minimum of two years’ experience working in a clinical, academic, teaching, or industry setting 

  • Experience in clinical applications of genetics and/or genomics 

  • Experience developing written education related to healthcare 

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills 

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills 

  • Ability to take direction and handle multiple projects simultaneously 

  • Collaborative and team-based approach to problem-solving and product development  

  • High degree of comfort using a variety of software applications and ability to learn new applications with high degree of independence 

Desired Qualifications  

  • Experience developing education for, or teaching, healthcare providers  

  • Experience in program evaluation and reporting 

  • Experience with marketing and dissemination 

  • Experience working with a remote team or collaborators  

  • Research and analysis skills 

  • Interest in staying abreast of current issues in genetics, genomics and adult education 

  • Strong, positive interpersonal skills sufficient to allow incumbent to work effectively in a high-profile environment requiring discretion, judgment, tact, and diplomacy
