Position Summary

The Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope is looking for a talented Postdoctoral Fellow within the laboratory of Debbie Thurmond, Ph.D. to study the molecular mechanisms involved in regulating functional beta cell mass, skeletal muscle insulin action, whole body glucose homeostasis, and healthspan/lifespan.

The Thurmond Lab specializes in detailed studies of signaling/trafficking/exocytosis, using primary human and rodent islet cells, skeletal muscle cells and adipocytes.

The position will encompass a variety of techniques, including human islet functional and structural characterizations in vitro and in vivo, biosensors and live-cell imaging, analysis of protein-protein interactions, CRISPR/small interference RNA, post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation/glycosylation/nitrosylation, as well as use of a variety of inducible tissue-specific transgenic and knockout animal models. The trainee will benefit from a close interaction with world-class clinical and basic science faculty and staff, and gain experience in state-of-the-art genomics, molecular genetics, cell biology, and animal model manipulations.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

A Ph.D. degree in life or biomedical sciences, or a related discipline is required.

About Dr. ThurmondDebbie Thurmond, Ph.D., is director of the Arthur Riggs Diabetes & Metabolism Research Institute and a renowned research scientist, professor and the founding chair of the newly created Department of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology.

Dr. Thurmond and her team will lead efforts to identify cellular and molecular mechanisms in diabetes development and therapies that can stop or reverse those processes. This can potentially lead to innovative treatment and prevention modalities for diabetes.
