Job Description

Research Assistant I, II, III

The laboratory of Dr. Basile Tarchini at The Jackson Laboratory is looking for a highly dedicated full-time Research Assistant. Our laboratory conducts competitive academic research to uncover the molecular basis of hearing and balance. We are particularly interested in understanding how sensory cells in the inner ear deploy and maintain during life a "motion sensor" compartment to detect sound, gravity and head movements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shared management of our mouse colony, including PCR-based genotyping.
  • Stereomicroscope-assisted microdissection of the inner ear for fixed or live preparations.
  •  Molecular biology experiments including cloning, cell culture, microscopy and more.
  •  Laboratory management tasks.
  • Flexibility in the position: duties and responsibilities will be commensurate with the position grade. Based on experience, career level and personal motivation, the research assistant might have the opportunity to take responsibility for a project in the laboratory.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 1-3 years of related experience required.
  • Essential: patience, excellent manual skills and good visual depth perception (needed to master microdissection of the inner ear using a stereomicroscope).
  • Ability to work with mice on a daily basis (previous experience is not mandatory).
  • Very strong work ethic, positive, proactive and responsible behavior. Excellent organization skills.
  • Prior experience in microdissection, molecular biology, cell culture, tissue handling or biochemistry preferred.
  • Willingness to learn and interact positively with colleagues. The research assistant will assist doctoral and postdoctoral trainees in the laboratory with their projects.
  • We are asking for a minimum commitment of 2-year. Importantly, the position strictly requires 40 hours of effective work per week. Depending on grade level, the position might require a flexible schedule and some limited week-end work.
