CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.


The CERC Fellow will use leading-edge, X-ray imaging technology to push the limits of biosecurity threat detection in fresh produce. Global trade in fresh, agricultural produce is a high-risk pathway for a wide range of biosecurity threats such as plant pests and diseases. X-ray technology offers exciting opportunities for automated pest detection.  


 
The CERC Fellow will be working in a vibrant, multi-disciplinary team with expertise in the application of diverse imaging technologies to solve problems in agriculture, mining and metals, advanced analytics, biosecurity, and the translation of science into impact. As a CERC  Fellow you will have the opportunity to build and maintain networks, develop new business, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts and beneficial impacts.

 

This Fellowship is part of the Autonomous Sensing Future Science Platform, offering new opportunities to work on frontier science to accelerate the generation of new tools to enable growth of digital decision making within domains; combining fundamental sensor research with autonomous engineering solutions to provide new advanced sensing and platform technologies for the environmental monitoring, health monitoring, mining, agriculture, and manufacturing domains.

 

 

Your duties will include:

  • Contributing to the development and experimental verification of methodologies for the automatic detection of biosecurity threats in fresh produce using X-ray technology.
  • Extending technology to scan bulk samples using novel X-ray equipment and techniques, and refine into a deployable, automated detection technology.
  • Creating an extensive catalogue of experimental data, for the development and testing of machine learning algorithms.
  • Maintaining a focus on adoption of Research and Development (R&D).
  • Incorporating novel approaches to scientific study by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas into existing and future research.

 

Location: Brisbane, Queensland

Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as medical physics, experimental physics, high energy physics or other physical sciences.  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Experience with computer programming, such as but not limited to Python, C, C++, and Matlab.
  • Experience working with at least one imaging technique including an understanding of image processing, and an aptitude and willingness to apply imaging and analytical technologies to novel applications for applied outcomes.
  • Excellent experimental and data collection skills.
  • Willingness and the ability, when permitted, to travel throughout Australia and internationally, including regular trips to conduct laboratory work at CSIRO Lucas Heights (Sydney).

Eligibility

To be eligible to work in CSIRO you must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or either hold, or be able to obtain, a valid working visa.

 

For this role, you must also be able to commence by March 2022.

 

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check.  Additional integrity checks may be required for specific roles which require security clearance for working with children, Australian Government cybersecurity requirements or other identified security roles.
