This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : The Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department has a postdoctoral position open for a passionate, motivated researcher to work on electrochemical materials chemistry and battery development. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work with our industry and academic partners, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; + Contribute to a multidisciplinary electrochemical and materials-focused research effort towards developing new membranes and electrolyte materials.

Required:
+ PhD in Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Chemistry,Chemical Engineering or a closely related area in physical sciences and engineering; + Laboratory experience in electrochemistry, electrochemical characterization, separator characterization and battery assembly and testing; + Record of independent research, publications and conference presentations.

Desired:
+ Strong Academic background; + Record of interdisciplinary research collaborations; + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance; + Extensive laboratory experience including a broad background in electrochemical materials synthesis and testing; + Experience with chemical and electrochemical characterization techniques as well as a strong background in laboratory-scale battery assembly and testing; + Technical experience and a proven publication record in the area of battery testing, ideally related to fuel cells, flow battery or similar batteries chemistries; + Knowledgeable about adapting electrochemical testing procedures and materials to accommodate new technical developments; + Familiarity with and a willingness to explore connections between materials science and electrochemistry; + Technical skills related to programming, data processing, and instrumental setup; + Strong laboratory skills; + Ability to engage and to contribute to multiple programs; + Highly motivated, and the ability to interact with team members of diverse technical backgrounds; + Ability to conduct independent, focused research.

Department Description:

The Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department manages the DOE Office of Electricity Energy Storage Systems research program. The primary R&D focus of the department is on the development of advanced energy storage technologies and systems including development of low cost battery technologies, safety and reliability of energy storage systems, power electronics and power conversion systems, computational and analytical tools for efficient utilization of energy storage in the electricity infrastructure. In addition, the department manages several activities for the DOE related to the deployment and demonstration of new energy storage projects, including the development of methods and tools to evaluate the performance of storage systems, and methods for the optimal utilization of energy storage assets. The department works closely with the Photovoltaic and Distributed Systems Integration Department, Power Systems Department, as well as the Wind Energy Technologies Department since renewables integration is a key application area for energy storage. We also have active collaborations with many stakeholders in the electricity industry including electric utilities, product developers, universities and other national laboratories to enable the development and rapid integration of energy storage technologies in the electricity infrastructure.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
