Job Description

We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher to support projects in concentrating solar thermochemical technologies, including, but not limited to, hydrogen and fuel production, desalination, and energy storage. The position involves synthesis and characterization of materials for solar thermochemical applications. The candidate will work in the Applied Optical/Plasma Science department within the Material, Physical, and Chemical Sciences Center (1800), which provides the foundational materials expertise and innovation to enable Sandia success in its national security missions. Access to cheap and reliable renewable energy is a key component of national security. Besides the design and synthesis of new materials with specific functionality, Center 1800 maintains state of the art materials characterization tools that benefit all Sandia programs. The candidate will also work closely with staff members in the Concentrated Solar Technologies Department. Primary Job Duties: + Independently conduct and deliver your own R&D activities or projects under leadership of senior staff. These activities and projects may be theoretical, computational and/or experimental. These activities will often require working in teams that can include partners from other institutions + Work with Sandia’s technology transfer and licensing professionals to move successful R&D from the Labs to industry + Assist or lead in the development of proposals to seek funding from sponsors and customers for new or ongoing R&D projects in thermochemical technologies + Disseminate R&D outcomes in various forms including journal article publications and by presenting papers at national and international conferences + Potentially represent Sandia and the department in national or international committees relating to conferences, standards and publications.

Required:
+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in chemistry/chemical engineering, materials science/engineering, or related discipline. + Bachelor degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). + Evidence of research expertise in the form of technical publications and conference presentations + Strong record of original work as evidenced by presentations at national/international conferences and publications in refereed journals. + Extensive hands-on laboratory experience and capable of independent and safe laboratory practices.

Desired:
+ Resumes should include at least three professional references, a brief statement of research interests and a list of publications. + Candidates should be capable of creative problem solving and effective time management skills. + Proficiency in inorganic and materials synthetic methods and characterization, including XRD, TGA, DSC, SEM + Experience with one or more of the following: heat transfer, thermodynamics, kinetics, modeling (including thermokinetic modeling), oxide and/or nitride chemistry, computational methods, + Background in high temperature and/or solar thermochemical processes + Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills + Ability to work independently, take initiative, and expand outside of comfort zone + Willingness to collaborate with scientists and engineers of various backgrounds in a multidisciplinary teaming environment.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base.
