Job Description
Under general supervision of the Foreman, performs preventative maintenance, operational functions, & repairs to building systems; structures & utilities in strict accordance with established safety practices & procedures. Position Requirements
Under general supervision of the Utilities Instrument and Controls Supervisor, Maintenance mechanic will perform general and specific maintenance activities on ANL’s Utilities Electrical Infrastructure of 480 Volts and below, including:
Troubleshooting, repairs, replacement, testing, calibration, and functional checks on components comprising Argonne National Laboratory campus wide Rockwell Automation water SCADA, and Central steam plant combustion system, including but not limited to:
- Pressure, temperature, conductivity, pH, proximity… etc. sensors.
- Ultrasonic level / flow detection.
- Pressure vessel instrumentation – boiler specific.
Troubleshooting, repairs, replacement, and functional checks on components comprising Utilities Electrical systems 480 Volt and below in following applications:
- Centralized Steam production facility – Metal clad switchgear, MCCs and stand-alone starters/isolation devices.
- Wastewater treatment facility – Industrial water processing, including process motor/pump applications and VFDs
- Centralized and distributed water pumping, storage, distribution, and collection systems.
- Lift station automation.

All duties are required to be performed in strict accordance with established safety practices and procedures. This is a first shift / straight days position with occasional call in / off shift coverage requirements.
General Duties
We expect you should possess a high degree of proficiency in the repair, calibration/adjustment diagnosis, defective component replacement, functional test performance, disassembly and overhauling of at least two major systems listed below:
- Steam systems
- Boiler or Combined Heat and Power Plant maintenance
- Compressed air systems
- Plumbing systems / underground piping
- Electrical systems up to and including 480 volts, emergency generators, and UPS equipment
- Steam driven mechanical equipment
- Instrumentation and calibration of sensors, meters, and equipment.
- Any degree of PLC operation/application knowledge.
Requirements
- Minimum two years of technical school training or equivalent in industrial maintenance and three years of professional industrial maintenance experience in two or more of the above categories, or
- Minimum five years of professional experience in industrial maintenance with expertise in two or more of the above categories.
- Proficiency in RSLogix 5000, RS View, and HART communication protocol needed.
- Good familiarity of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, instrumentation drawings, solid state and mechanical relays, and ladder logic preferred
- BEAMEX calibrator / Database familiarity a plus
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Brand specific Allen Bradley / Rockwell Automation PLC hardware and software familiarity a plus
- Good skills in oral and written communications
- Complies with all Laboratory and Division Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H) policies, work rules, and safe work practices
- Experience in predictive maintenance processes and methodologies is desired
