Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Process/ Production Manager for our Radioisotope Research and Production Program (R2P2). Supporting the radioisotope production and research portfolio with the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production, this position will work with highly skilled staff, radiological materials, and the unique facilities at Argonne (the electron linear accelerator at the Low Energy Accelerator Facility – LEAF and the Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System – ATLAS) to guide our on-going isotope production program and guide the transition of new isotopes from R&D to production. This position will be responsible for managing the process and production of isotopes across a matrix organization.

This position will support the Argonne Radioisotope Research and Production Program (R2P2). The program is committed to producing radionuclides for the DOE Isotope Program. The program currently produces copper-67 for the DOE Isotope Program and is seeking an individual that understands the rigors and demands of radionuclide production to ensure reliable delivery of high-quality isotopes to end users and assist in growing our radionuclide portfolio.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the production process by developing and implementing robust procedures across the portfolio.

  • Carry out chemical processing including but not limited to separation and purification of produced isotopes.

  • Participate and facilitate in the transition from the R&D phase to production and delivery.

  • Work closely with the R&D team to establish and implement production procedures that are robust, reproducible, and reliable.

  • Work closely with the R2P2 Team to schedule production, processing, and shipping to ensure timely delivery to customers.

  • Work closely with the Quality Assurance representatives to implement a robust quality plan encompassing production and maintenance across a multi-functional team.

  • Oversee both the accelerator production and chemical processing PM programs developed in collaboration with the respective teams.

  • Manage the budget and track expenses incurred for all aspects of batches of isotopes.

  • Maintain detailed batch records of each production run.

  • Analyze production data to detect and mitigate suspect trends in product quality.

  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with appropriate safety, security, and quality protocols.

  • Shepard production process from order through production and shipping across functional teams

Position Requirements

  • A BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience in chemical processing

  • Strong operations management skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interface with both front-line workers, supervisors, and upper management in a matrix organization.

  • Ability and willingness to work with radionuclides

  • Experience with development and implementation of processes and procedures that ensure a reproducible, high-quality product.

Preferred Additional Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related field

  • Experience with accelerator-produced radioisotopes

  • Experience implementing preventative maintenance programs

  • Experience with short lead time manufacturing

  • Prior experience with six sigma principles

  • Experience in radionuclide R&D and/or production

  • Experience in Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)

  • Knowledge of and experience with quality assurance activities including supporting regulatory, customer, and performance audits, recommending and implementing corrective actions, providing complete and accurate documentation of quality activities through technical reports, and ensuring quality assurance compliance

  • Working knowledge of and experience in project management of technical or operational work, including developing project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages; managing to scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines; and documenting baseline reports and change control actions.
