Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The Vehicle Mobility Systems group (VMS, vms.es.anl.gov) at Argonne is seeking applicants for a Post-Doctoral Researcher position, to quantify energy consumption, performance and cost benefits of technologies applicable for marine vessels.

Successful applicants will perform vehicle modelling and simulation of advanced powertrains to quantify the impacts of new component technologies, control techniques and powertrain architectures.

The candidate will support Department of Energy (DOE) funded projects to benchmark existing vehicles and identify opportunities for decarbonization of this sector.

Current project opportunities include simulation and analysis of conventional powertrains used in this application, development of hybrid and electric powertrain designs, development of supervisory control logic, validation of vehicle models against test data etc. Ideal candidates have technical experience in modelling different types of marine vessels, systems analysis, techno-economic analysis of such systems.

The projects and interests of this group spans all modes of transportation including off-road, rail & marine applications too. These projects involve close collaboration with industrial and academic partners, and engagement with multidisciplinary project teams.  Prior experience with analysis of relevant technologies through academic or industrial projects is desirable. Postdoctoral Researchers collect and synthesize information to conduct vehicle simulation studies in the Autonomie modeling platform. They also handle large datasets to extract meaningful results related to vehicle testing giving insights into engine or motor operation, supervisory control techniques, communicate results through well-designed presentations, publish journal articles and reports, and present results at conferences, workshops, and project meetings.

The VMS Group supports DOE and other sponsors to assess the energy, cost and performance outcomes associated with specific technologies in order to guide R&D efforts. Postdoctoral Researchers will join project teams including experts in a variety of topics relevant to their work and will regularly collaborate with experts from Argonne as well as in industry and at other national laboratories.

The VMS group develops and maintains several simulation tools such as Autonomie, Polaris, RoadRunner, BEAN, SVTriP. which are widely used by government, industry, and academic stakeholders. Results from the Postdoctoral Researchers’ work may be incorporated in annual updates of these tools.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in mechanical, electrical engineering, naval engineering or other related field with coursework and/or research experience relevant to advanced vehicle concepts.
