Job Description

Designs, develops and conducts research programs related to synchrotron based science. Plans and implements new optics, instrumentation and methods including sample environments for the beamlines and laboratories at the Advanced Photon Source, and report results in appropriate form. Supports user experiments at the beamlines and laboratories. Performs collaborative research with users of the facilities and internal and external research scientists. Recruits new external research groups to utilize the beamlines and laboratories for cutting-edge science.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 8+ years of experience, Master’s and 5+ years, or Doctorate and 4+ years.
  • Verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with internal and external contacts of varied professional/technical levels to achieve assigned goals and communicate scientific results and experimental plans.
  • Experience with designing and conducting synchrotron based experiments with particular focus on in-situ and operando research.
  • Knowledge of synchrotron based techniques, as diffraction, imaging and/or spectroscopy.
  • Knowledge of technique theory and approaches to advanced analysis, refinement and modeling.
  • Skill in oral and written communication of scientific results and experimental plans.
  • Knowledge of x-ray instrumentation, control hardware and software, including experience with the operation and commissioning of synchrotron beamlines and experiments.
  • Ability to use and develop instrumentation and computer software related to sample environments and data acquisition for beamline experiments.
