Job Description

Our Environmental Science (EVS) division is currently seeking a Deputy Division Director to join the division. In this role you will participate in the conception and implementation of the division’s research programs along with the scientific, strategic, and administrative leadership of the EVS division. You will serving along with the Division Director as a point of contact for the Department of Energy program offices and other organizations that fund the division activities.  Participate as a key member of management and interaction between environmental science activities in the directorate, ANL, and externally. Works with the DD and the EVS Department Heads to define and coordinate the short/long-term division strategic directions, and in planning, goal setting, and benchmarking of the division’s activities.  Interfaces with the Department of Energy and other sponsors and play a lead and supporting role in obtaining funds for the facility, new projects, and initiatives. Maintains an active role in research and development activities within your area of expertise. Serves as spokesperson and back-up to the DD as required.

 

The Environmental Science (EVS) Division provides pioneering fundamental and multidisciplinary research to understand and solve global, national, regional, and local energy and environmental challenges using Argonne National Laboratory’s unique, world-class facilities in conjunction with the division’s core competency in predictive environmental understanding.  We conduct research to understand environmental and climate processes at different scales.  We develop a suite of models, datasets, and analytical capabilities for climate risk and uncertainty analysis at different scales. We guide responsible development of energy and new materials and stewardship of natural resources and legacy sites.  We develop coupled physical/social models to understand human decisions and behaviors, and we conduct cross-cutting research using high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), and advanced geospatial tools to improve our predictive power and speed. Position Requirements

  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills, concepts and methods.
  • Experience managing complex technical organizations, including accountability for technical performance, strategic planning, and consensus building.
  • Skill in building and sustaining consensus and collaboration among key stakeholders especially interacting and coordinating sponsoring organizations.
  • Ability to organize and manage large, complex operations in coordination with various external entities participating in the execution of such operations.
  • Ability to conceptualize, launch, and deliver multiple projects on time and within budget.
  • Ability to understand issues in a broad range of sciences.
  • Collaborative skills, including the ability to interact well with external collaborators and vendors.
  • Ability in motivating staff and in establishing effective interpersonal relationships with cross-function teams and project stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills and the ability to engage and influence all levels of internal and external contacts
  • Knowledge of general practices and objectives of funding agencies as well as vendors and a solid track record of creating, developing, and sustaining programs.
  • Ability to identify research opportunities and participate in the preparation of funding proposals.
  • Partner with the Division Director and the strategic leads to define and coordinate the overall division strategy.
  • Conducts research in Earth System/Environmental Science as an Individual contributor along with the Deputy Division Director’s role.
  • This level of knowledge and skill is typically achieved through a Master's or Ph.D. in environmental science, climate or earth system science and 10 years of experience managing or leading substantial earth system science research projects, or equivalent.
