Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to mainly conduct research to develop long-life and safe layered oxide cathode materials for electrochemical energy storage systems under the guidance of a supervisor. The project involves physical, chemical, and electrochemical characterization of layered oxide cathodes using various characterization technologies. The candidate will establish the relationship between the physical/chemical properties and electrochemical performance of the layered oxide cathodes. The candidate will also conduct novel characterization of these materials using advanced x-ray synchrotron measurements. Provides an understanding of the mechanisms of operation and possible methods for improvements of advanced electrochemical cells, including lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. The candidate should be able to analyze data, prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, present papers at scientific meetings, and prepare reports and presentations/papers for group meetings.

Position Requirements

  • Successful candidate will have recently completed Ph. D Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or Electrochemistry with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent

  • Skills in different synthetic techniques (co-precipitation, solid state reaction …) used to produce layered oxide cathode materials and compounds.

  • Deep understanding of electrochemistry, able to conduct the cyclic voltammetry, EIS, and galvanostatic test of half/full cells.

  • Knowledge of synchrotron-based X-ray techniques (such as x-ray diffraction and spectroscopy) for in situ studies of Materials/Interfacial chemistry during synthesis and high temperature, high-voltage, or high rate operation.

  • Considerable skill in the characterization on the thermal stability of cathode materials (such as TGA, ARC, TGA-MS…) and safety of battery pack.

  • Good knowledge and good skill and understanding to provide novel solutions to electrochemical issues from other areas of materials research, oxides, composites, and electrochemical interfaces.

  • Knowledge of processing and analyzing results.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills and good record of publication and external recognition in relevant areas
