Job Description

The Legal team at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Legal Operations Manager to join their team. The Legal Department provides world-class legal services to support world-class science and the mission of the Laboratory.

 

This role is responsible for managing the Department’s operations, including human resources, finance, budget, procurement, discovery, legal holds, matter and document management, billing systems, internal controls, and Department of Energy (DOE) performance requirements in accordance with parameters and goals established by the Laboratory’s General Counsel. The Legal Operations Manager acts as the Legal Department liaison to the Office of the Laboratory Director, the DOE Office of the Chief Counsel, and the Office of the Chief Financial Officer for legal administrative matters and serves as the point-of-contact for other outside entities, including governmental agencies, business associates, outside law firms, courts, taxing authorities, and insurance companies. The position supervises five direct reports, and acts as project manager for department projects.

    Position Requirements

    • Minimum Bachelor’s degree required.
    • JD or professional certification such as Certified Legal Manager (CLM) designation preferred.
    • Experience in managing support staff and Legal Department workflow.
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
    • Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders including staff, management, and executive levels, and maintain positive interpersonal relationships throughout the organization.
    • Demonstrated project management skills in a professional environment.
    • Ability to take initiative and act independently with little guidance.
    • Knowledge, skill, and experience with implementing and using legal department technology solutions (e.g., Legal Tracker, HighQ, and DocuSign), and with administrative procedures and practices, including human resources, finance, budgeting, and purchasing.
    • Analytical abilities and skill in reading and understanding legal documents including court pleadings, statutes, and regulations, and in organizing large bodies of information into articulate, cohesive written opinions and reports.
    • Ability to act in a professional manner and maintain standards of ethics and confidentiality with highly sensitive, proprietary, and privileged information.
    • Experience developing forms, processes, and policies
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Power Point) and Adobe Acrobat.
    • Knowledge of procurement software and policies.
    • Ability to learn Argonne National Laboratory’s organizational structure, policies, procedures, and administrative systems.
    • Ability to learn Argonne National Laboratory’s reimbursable/non-reimbursable costs under the Argonne National Laboratory Prime Contract.
    • Ability to learn 10 CFR 719 and DOE legal management plan requirements and the relationship between DOE and Argonne management.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 badge.
