Job Description

Supports technical, economic, and environmental analyses of energy and power systems. Develops and applies methodologies and tools for techno-economic analyses of energy technologies and systems, including conventional and renewable electricity generating technologies, energy storage, demand response, distributed energy resources, and others. Tools include computer modeling and simulations, databases, analysis algorithms, computational methodologies, economic and financial models. Analyses include power system operation and expansion, engineering economics and finance, life cycle analysis, optimization and equilibrium analysis, impact analysis, market penetration, interdependencies. Personnel have education and/or experience in engineering or economics discipline. This description documents the general nature of work but is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all activities, duties and responsibilities required of job incumbent. Consequently, job incumbent may be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Develop power systems modeling tools that support energy, economic, and environmental analyses. Some of these tools will require the creation of simulation and optimization routines.

Perform data analytics and conduct research related to a wide range of topic areas including the analysis of energy and power systems, electricity market design and operations, renewable energy and energy storage integration, and other energy technologies.

Present and publish results in peer reviewed reports and journal articles. Make presentations at professional conferences. Support program development activities.  Maintains up-to-date knowledge of pertinent literature in which related work is being conducted.

Position Requirements

  • The candidate must have a PhD degree, or a Master of Science degree and 3 years of work experience, or a Bachelor of Science degree and 5 years of work experience in a relevant engineering discipline.

  • Knowledge and skills in developing innovative algorithms, methodologies, and tools to model and simulate energy and power systems or their components.

  • A successful candidate must have significant knowledge of mathematical optimization methods (e.g., mixed integer programming, nonlinear optimization, stochastic programming). Coding skills are a plus but not required.

  • Knowledge of data analytics, power systems operations and electricity markets, ISO and utility business, applied economics, policy, and regulations.

  • A successful candidate must have significant capabilities in production cost and capacity expansion modeling of power system, modeling of electricity markets and emerging technologies.

  • Experience in the analysis of integration of variable renewables and energy storage into the grid, environmental and other issues.

  • Experience in statistics and statistical analysis.

  • Knowledge of basic financial and economic principles.

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills at all levels of the organization.
