Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an Intellectual Property Attorney for its Legal Department.  This individual will join a team of 7 attorneys and 6 support staff providing advice and services on a broad range of legal issues associated with the operation of a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory.  The position will support the Science and Technology Partnerships and Outreach Directorate of the Laboratory and will work closely with Argonne researchers and operations staff on a variety of Laboratory initiatives, including research collaborations, sponsored research agreements, procurements, and intellectual property licensing arrangements.  The position will also perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Protect the rights and interests of Argonne and the DOE in the intellectual property developed from the activities of the Laboratory and promote the commercialization and public availability of such intellectual property.

  • Engage in transactional work, including non-disclosure agreements, license agreements (that may contain equity provisions), material transfer agreements, cooperative research and development agreements, strategic partnership project agreements, and consortium agreements, addressing such issues as deal structure and strategy, risk mitigation and management, and conflicts of interest

  • Advise Laboratory management and staff on intellectual property and technology transfer laws, regulations, orders, and requirements under Argonne’s prime contract with the U.S. Department of Energy.

  • Assist with drafting and implementing Laboratory policies and procedures pertaining intellectual property and technology transfer.

  • Engage and maintain productive working relationships with the Department of Energy, external sponsors, research collaborators and outside counsel.

Position Requirements

  • Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school with at least 5 years of legal experience in an intellectual property and/or technology transfer practice.

  • Admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois or eligible for a limited practice license in Illinois as in-house counsel.

  • Background in patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret and contract laws and regulations.

  • Experience structuring and negotiating complex transactions and handling disputes.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Experience participating in multi-disciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with a national laboratory or other federal government contractor working on federally funded research and development.

  • Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to government-owned intellectual property under the federal acquisition regulations.

  • Experience managing outside counsel.

  • Experience with other areas of law such as data privacy, cybersecurity, human subjects research, and export controls.
