Job Description
The Chemical Sciences and Engineering (CSE) Division of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a Process Engineering Assistant position within the Materials Research Development Program for Li-ion battery systems.
The research project contributes to the development of electrochemical devices for the sponsor’s needs. This position will contribute to the project through battery assembly, testing and cycling measurement analysis. Additionally, provide an understanding of the mechanisms of operation and possible methods for improvements of advanced electrochemical cells, including new materials and synthesis thereof.
Under the guidance of a supervisor, you will:
Support and advance battery technology research and development activities through production of prototype battery electrodes and pouch cells; specifically, fabrication of electrode coatings, electrolytes, and prototype cells
Catalogue data, prepare reports, present research to sponsors
Operate and maintain glove box equipment
Troubleshoot various laboratory equipment/instrumentation problems
Provide logistics support to the team (equipment, battery materials and components, shipping of materials to sponsor)
Interact with Argonne and external principal investigators to assist in timely completion of research projects
Position Requirements
We expect you to have:
Knowledge of engineering principles and practices, safe handling of chemicals/materials, laboratory and pilot-scale safety practices, battery electrode fabrication, battery assembly, and experimental procedures and techniques
Skills in recognizing abnormal behavior of equipment and methods of troubleshooting and repair
The ability to work/hands-on skills in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and quality control adherence
Observe and control details to ensure quality, repeatability, and standardization of pouch cell assembly and testing
Ability to problem-solve and provide pragmatic solutions
Oral and written communication skills
Work effectively as a team with fellow colleagues on a day-to-day basis
This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemical/industrial/mechanical engineering at the B.S./M.S. degree level and 0 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience. 2-3 years related experience is preferred.
